Two ways to prepare
Classroom coaching and self-paced online practice are not rivals so much as different tools. Both can work. The question is which one suits your timetable, your budget and the gap between your current band and the one you need.
Classroom coaching gives you a fixed timetable, a teacher in the room and other students around you. It is structured and social, and some people need that.
Online practice gives you a large bank of tests and exercises you can use at any hour, with instant scoring and feedback. With IELTS Learning you can add short 1-to-1 online sessions with an IELTS teacher when you need a human opinion on your Speaking or Writing.
Who classroom coaching suits
- Students who are new to the IELTS format and want someone to walk them through every question type in order.
- People who find it hard to study alone and need a fixed time and place to keep going.
- Those with a fairly free daytime schedule, such as recent graduates between jobs or students on a university break.
If that sounds like you, a good class can be worth it. Just make sure the class size is small enough that your own Writing and Speaking get real attention.
Who online coaching and teacher sessions suit
- Working professionals on long days or rotating shifts, including nurses and hospitality staff, who cannot promise to be in a classroom at 7 pm twice a week.
- Candidates who already know the format and need volume: more mock tests, more Reading passages, more essays marked.
- Students whose weakness is one specific module. There is little point paying for a full course when only Writing Task 2 is holding you back.
- Anyone who wants to work at their own pace, moving faster through what they already do well.
The Dubai commute: the hidden cost of classes
In a city this spread out, getting to a class is a real cost. A trip from International City to Al Barsha, or from Dubai Silicon Oasis to Bur Dubai, can take the best part of an hour each way at rush hour, and longer if you are coming in from outside the city. Add fuel, Salik tolls and parking, or a Metro and bus connection in the summer heat, and a twice-weekly class can quietly use up four or five hours a week.
Studying online gives that time back. Four hours a week is enough for a full mock test plus two Writing tasks, which is often more useful than sitting through a lesson that covers points you already know.
How to combine both approaches
You do not have to choose only one. A mix that works well for many people in Dubai:
- Diagnose first. Take the free sample mock test and convert your raw scores with the Band Score Calculator.
- Use online practice for volume. Listening and Reading improve mainly through lots of timed practice with clear explanations. That is exactly what a question bank does well.
- Use a teacher for judgement. Writing and Speaking need a trained ear. A focused 20-minute session can show you why an essay sits at 6.0 rather than 6.5.
- If you join a class, use it for structure and do your extra mocks at home rather than paying for more classroom hours.
What to look for in any IELTS course
Whether you choose a classroom in Dubai, an online platform or a private tutor, ask these questions:
- Is the material in the real test format? Practice tests should match the four sections, timings and question types of the actual exam, and ideally the computer-delivered screens if that is the version you will take.
- How is Writing marked? Look for feedback against the four official criteria, not just a single number or "good effort".
- How much Speaking practice do you get? Two minutes of speaking in a group of twenty is not enough.
- Are the claims realistic? Be wary of anyone promising a guaranteed band. Nobody independent of the test can guarantee a score.
- Is the pricing clear? Know exactly what you get and for how long.
What IELTS Learning offers instead of a classroom
IELTS Learning is an online platform, so there is no address to travel to; students anywhere in Dubai use it from home or work. Full Access costs $12 for 2 months, paid once, and includes 15 full mock tests, Listening and Reading practice with explanations, AI feedback on Writing and Speaking, Study Notes and a personal study plan. Book a Teacher sessions, from $5, are booked separately when you want them.
The simplest way to judge whether online coaching suits you is to try it. Create a free account, take the sample mock, and see how far you are from your target before you spend anything.
