Classroom coaching vs online practice: what each really gives you
Sri Lanka has a strong tuition culture, so many Kandy students assume a class is the only serious way to prepare. It is one good option, not the only one. Here is a fair comparison.
A classroom course usually gives you:
- a fixed timetable, which helps if you struggle to study alone
- a teacher explaining strategies live and answering questions on the spot
- classmates to practise Speaking with
- but limited individual attention, because a teacher has to cover the whole group
Online practice with IELTS Learning gives you:
- 15 full mock tests that look and behave like the computer-delivered IELTS
- hundreds of Listening and Reading sets you can repeat whenever you choose
- AI-estimated bands for every Writing and Speaking attempt, criterion by criterion
- the option to book a 1-to-1 online teacher session of about 20 minutes when you want a human view
- but no one to push you to log in, so you need your own routine
Neither is automatically better. The question is which matches how you learn.
The Kandy factor: time on the road
Anyone who has sat in traffic between the clock tower and Peradeniya, or waited for a bus back to Digana or Matale after an evening class, knows the hidden cost of coaching in town. A two-hour class can easily take three and a half hours door to door. Over a ten-week course, that is a lot of study time spent in a bus or three-wheeler, plus the fares.
Practising online removes that travel completely. A student in Gampola, Kadugannawa or on a tea estate outside Nuwara Eliya has exactly the same tests as someone living beside Kandy Lake. On rainy evenings, when the roads are slow and flooded in places, you can still get a timed Reading set done at home.
Who suits which approach
A classroom course may suit you if:
- your English is at an early stage and you need grammar taught step by step
- you find it very hard to study without a fixed time and place
- you live close to the class and the commute is short
Online practice with occasional teacher sessions may suit you if:
- you already have a working level (roughly band 5.5 and above) and need exam technique and volume of practice
- you are a Peradeniya student, a doctor on rotations, a nurse on shifts or a hotel worker with changing hours
- you want to spend more time on your weakest module instead of following a group syllabus
- you are aiming at 7 or above and need harder material than a mixed-level class can offer
Combining a class with online practice
Many students do both, and it can work very well. Use the class for explanation and Speaking practice with others, then use the platform for the volume a class cannot fit in: timed Reading, extra Listening sets, and Writing tasks that get criterion-level feedback within minutes. Before your exam, sit at least two full mocks on our computer-style screens so the format holds no surprises.
If your class does not offer much individual Writing correction, a single 20-minute teacher session on two of your essays can show you exactly what is holding your score back.
What to look for in any IELTS course in Kandy
Whether you choose a class, an online platform or both, ask these questions:
- Does it match your track? Academic and General Training differ in Reading and Writing. A course that mixes them without separating the material wastes your time.
- Do you get full timed mocks? Practice sets are useful, but only full tests show your stamina and timing.
- How is Writing marked? Look for feedback on all four criteria, not just a single number or a few corrected spelling mistakes.
- How much Speaking practice do you actually get? In a class of twenty, you may speak for only a few minutes each session.
- Are the claims honest? No one can guarantee a band score. Be wary of anyone who does.
- Is the format current? Many Sri Lankan candidates now take the computer-delivered test, so practise on screens that work the same way.
