Two different ways to prepare
When people in Colombo say "IELTS coaching", they usually mean a classroom course: a group of students, a fixed timetable and a teacher at the front. IELTS Learning is something else. It is an online platform where you practise on your own, at your own pace, with instant marking for Listening and Reading, AI feedback for Writing and Speaking, and optional 1-to-1 sessions with an IELTS teacher.
Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on how you learn, how much time you have and what your score gap is.
Who each option suits
Classroom IELTS coaching in Colombo can suit you if:
- you need a fixed schedule and other people around you to stay motivated;
- your English is still developing and you benefit from long explanations of grammar;
- you live or work close to where the classes are held.
Self-paced online practice tends to suit you if:
- you work long or irregular hours, for example in IT support, banking operations or hospital shifts;
- you already use English daily and mainly need exam technique and lots of timed practice;
- you want to spend more time on your weakest module instead of moving at the group's pace;
- you live outside the central areas, in places like Kadawatha, Homagama or Ja-Ela, and the journey in is long.
The commute nobody adds up
A two-hour class can easily cost four hours once you count the journey. Anyone who has crawled along Galle Road through Bambalapitiya at six in the evening, or waited at Maradana for a delayed train, knows this. During the south-west monsoon, a heavy afternoon downpour can make the trip even slower.
Add up a typical course:
- Two or three evening classes a week, each with an hour or more of travel each way.
- Bus, train or three-wheeler fares on top of the course fee.
- Missed sessions when work runs late or a lecture overlaps.
Online practice removes the travel entirely. The hours you save can go into actual practice: an extra Listening set, a timed essay or a full mock test.
What to look for in any IELTS course
Whatever you choose, online or in a room in Colombo, check these points before you pay:
- Full, timed mock tests in the real format, ideally on screens like the computer-delivered test.
- Feedback on Writing against the four official criteria, not just a mark out of ten.
- Real Speaking practice with timing for the cue card, not only discussion of topics.
- Separate Academic and General Training material, so you are not reading the wrong kind of passage.
- Honest promises. Nobody can guarantee a band score. Be wary of anyone who does.
- A clear price and a clear list of what is included.
Combining online practice with a teacher
Many students get the best results from a mix. Practise on your own most days, then use a teacher for the things self-study cannot do well.
On IELTS Learning, Book a Teacher gives you a 1-to-1 online session with an IELTS teacher, about 20 minutes long, from $5. Students typically use it for:
- a full Speaking mock with live questions and follow-up;
- detailed comments on a Task 2 essay that the AI has already scored;
- a second opinion on whether they are ready to book the real test.
If you already attend a classroom course in Colombo, you can still use the platform alongside it for extra mocks and timed sets between classes.
A common pattern among working students in the city looks like this: practise on the platform on weekday evenings, take a full mock on Sunday, and book a teacher session every second week to review Writing or rehearse Speaking. Nurses working shifts at hospitals around the city often prefer this, because a fixed class timetable rarely fits a rotating roster. Students at the University of Colombo or Moratuwa can do the same around lectures and assignments, moving practice to the weekend during exam periods.
