Who takes IELTS in Kandy
Kandy has a broader IELTS crowd than many people expect. A large share are school leavers from the city's well-known schools who have their sights set on undergraduate study in Australia, the UK or New Zealand. Another big group comes from the University of Peradeniya: medical and dental graduates thinking about training in the UK, engineers looking at Australia and New Zealand, and science and agriculture graduates applying for master's and PhD places abroad.
Then there are working professionals. Nurses and other health workers from Kandy's teaching hospitals, managers and guest-relations staff from the tourism and hotel trade, and people working in tea-related roles across the Central Province all sit IELTS for study, registration or a move overseas. Because the city is home to both Sinhala and Tamil speakers, the strengths and weak spots people bring to the test vary a lot, which is why a plan built on your own results beats a one-size-fits-all class.
Academic or General Training: decide before you start
Choose your track first, because Reading and Writing are different for each.
- Academic is for university study and, in many cases, professional registration (doctors and nurses are often asked for Academic). Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- General Training is usually for work, training below degree level or migration. Task 1 is a letter, and Reading uses everyday and workplace texts.
Listening and Speaking are the same for both. If you are unsure, check the exact requirement with the university, regulator or immigration authority before you book anything. On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you sign up, and your practice sets and mock tests follow it.
Planning IELTS preparation around life in Kandy
Most students here are juggling something: lectures at Peradeniya, A/L results, hospital shifts or long days during the tourist season. A few practical points help.
- Use the dead time. The crawl through Kandy town at peak hours, or the bus out to Katugastota, Kundasale or Gampola, is a good time for Daily Vocabulary or flashcards on your phone. Save timed Reading and full mocks for a quiet desk.
- Plan for the rain. Heavy monsoon showers on a tin roof make Listening practice hard. Keep good headphones and schedule Listening for calmer hours.
- Protect one long block a week. A full mock takes close to three hours. Sunday mornings work well for many students.
- Give yourself enough runway. If you are around band 5.5 and need 6.5, eight to twelve weeks of steady work is a realistic starting point. Someone already scoring 6.5 who needs 7 may need less, but the last half band is often the hardest.
Everything on the platform, in one place

Full Access is $12 for 2 months, paid once by card in US dollars through PayPal. If you want a human opinion on your Speaking or an essay, you can Book a Teacher for a 1-to-1 online session of about 20 minutes, from $5, booked separately.
Academic students can also tell us about their study plans, and if they agree, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses that fit.
A sensible first fortnight
- Take the free sample mock test to get an honest baseline in all four modules.
- Check your Listening and Reading scores against the Band Score Calculator so you know how many correct answers you need.
- Pick your weakest module and give it half your study time for two weeks.
- Write one Task 2 essay every few days and read the criterion-by-criterion feedback carefully.
- Start Daily Vocabulary from day one; five words a day adds up.
