Who takes IELTS in Amritsar, and why
Walk down almost any lane in Amritsar and you will find someone who has taken IELTS, is preparing for it, or is waiting for a sibling's result. The reasons vary more than people assume.
- Students after Class 12 or a degree from colleges such as Khalsa College, DAV College or BBK DAV College for Women, aiming at diplomas and degrees in Canada, Australia, the UK or New Zealand.
- Postgraduates and researchers at Guru Nanak Dev University who want a master's or PhD abroad and need a strong Academic score.
- Nurses and doctors trained in Amritsar's medical and nursing colleges who are looking at registration overseas, where Writing and Speaking requirements are often high.
- Hospitality and tourism workers. A city that receives pilgrims and visitors every day of the year produces chefs, front-office staff and hotel managers whose skills travel well.
- Families from across Majha, from Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Batala and the villages around Ajnala, who come into Amritsar for coaching or the test itself and are often applying for work, spouse or family routes.
Academic or General Training: choosing the right track
The two tracks share the same Listening and Speaking tests. They differ in Reading and Writing.
Academic is for university admission and, in many cases, professional registration. Reading uses long, dense passages similar to textbook or journal writing, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
General Training is usually for work, migration and some family routes. Reading uses notices, workplace documents and one longer general text, and Writing Task 1 is a letter.
If you are unsure, ask the university, employer or immigration authority you are applying to. Do not guess: students in Amritsar sometimes prepare for one track because a friend did, then discover their course or visa needs the other. When you sign up on IELTS Learning you pick a track, and your Reading and Writing practice follows it.
Fitting IELTS preparation around life in Amritsar
Most people preparing here are already busy. A GNDU student may have classes until afternoon on the campus off GT Road. A hotel employee near the Golden Temple might be on early or late shifts that change weekly. Many young people help in a family shop in Hall Bazaar or on the farm during harvest.
Online preparation suits this pattern because it does not depend on a fixed batch time. A few practical ways students make it work:
- Use fixed short slots. Forty-five minutes before college, or one Listening set after dinner, adds up over a month.
- Save the long work for one free morning a week. A full mock or a Writing Task 2 essay needs uninterrupted time, so keep that for your day off.
- Plan around the calendar. Gurpurab, Diwali, Baisakhi and wedding season all eat into study weeks. Mark them in your plan early instead of losing momentum.
- Keep your phone for the small tasks. Vocabulary flashcards and the Mistake Notebook work well on a phone; Writing and full mocks are better on a laptop.
What you get on IELTS Learning
IELTS Learning is an online platform for IELTS preparation, not a coaching centre. There is no branch in Amritsar, which means you can use it from Ranjit Avenue, Model Town, Chheharta or a village outside the city in exactly the same way.
- 15 full mock tests on screens that behave like computer-delivered IELTS, with a timer, question navigator, flag for review, highlighter and notes. Listening and Reading are scored instantly.
- 88 Listening sets and 52 Reading sets, plus harder "Charged" sets for students targeting band 7 and above.
- 104 Writing prompts with an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria and feedback on what to fix.
- 186 Speaking prompts for all three parts, including cue cards with a real one-minute preparation timer, and AI feedback on your transcript.
- Book a Teacher: roughly 20-minute 1-to-1 online sessions from ₹299, useful when you want a human view of your Speaking or an essay.
- Study tools: Mistake Notebook, Study Notes for each module, English Improvement lessons, spaced-repetition flashcards and a personal study plan.
Full Access costs ₹999 for 2 months as a single payment. Teacher sessions are booked separately.
If you are on the Academic track and planning to study abroad, you can also share your preferred countries, course and intake. With your permission, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses.
A sensible first fortnight
- Days 1–2: Create a free account and take the free sample mock under timed conditions.
- Days 3–5: Use the Band Score Calculator to see where your overall score stands, and note your weakest module.
- Days 6–10: Work on that module first, using the free sample Listening and Reading sets and the Study Notes.
- Days 11–14: Write one Task 2 essay and record one Speaking cue card. Compare the feedback with what you expected.
Add Daily Vocabulary from day one. Five words a day is small enough to keep going through a busy week.
Booking the real test
The test is run by IDP and the British Council, and sessions are available in and around Amritsar. Book only through their official websites, where you will find current dates, fees and formats. IELTS Learning is independent and not affiliated with either organisation, but our tests follow the same official format, so the screens and timings will feel familiar on test day.
