Who takes IELTS in Lagos, and why
Lagos produces a steady stream of IELTS candidates, and they rarely share the same goal. Final-year students and fresh graduates from the University of Lagos, Lagos State University and Yaba College of Technology often need the Academic test for a master's place in the UK, Canada, Ireland or the US. Nurses, midwives, pharmacists and doctors from the city's hospitals frequently need high scores for professional registration abroad. Software developers and product people from the Yaba tech scene, and bankers, auditors and engineers from Lekki, Ikoyi and Victoria Island, may need the General Training test for a work or migration route.
Each of these groups needs a different band and a different emphasis, which is why a single "one size fits all" course rarely works. Start by writing down exactly who will read your score (a university, a regulator or an immigration authority) and check their current requirement directly with them.
Academic or General Training: pick the right track first
Listening and Speaking are the same in both versions. The difference is in Reading and Writing.
- Academic: for university study and many professional registrations. Reading uses long, dense passages; Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map.
- General Training: often used for work and migration. Reading uses notices, workplace documents and one longer general text; Writing Task 1 is a letter.
If you are unsure, ask the organisation that will receive your result. On IELTS Learning you choose your track when you register, and your practice sets and writing prompts follow that choice.
Preparing for IELTS around Lagos life
Lagos asks a lot of your time before you even open a book. A trip from Ikorodu to Victoria Island, or across Third Mainland Bridge at rush hour, can swallow two or three hours of your day. That is time you could use for Listening practice with headphones in a danfo or on the BRT, or for reviewing vocabulary flashcards while you wait in go-slow.
Power is the other practical issue. A few habits help:
- Charge your laptop and a power bank whenever there is light, and save full mock tests for those windows.
- Keep short tasks (Daily Vocabulary, a single Reading passage, a Speaking cue card) for phone sessions on mobile data.
- Plan one longer session at the weekend, when the generator or inverter is more reliable and the house is quieter.
Everything on IELTS Learning, in one place
IELTS Learning was built by an Australian tech team as an online platform, not a coaching centre, with no physical premises to visit. Everything works in the browser:
- 15 full mock tests on screens that behave like the computer-delivered IELTS, with a timer, question navigator, highlighter and notes, plus instant Listening and Reading bands.
- 88 Listening sets recorded with British voices, and 52 Reading sets with explanations for every answer.
- Charged sets: harder Listening and Reading for anyone chasing band 7 and above.
- 104 Writing prompts with an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria, and 186 Speaking prompts with AI feedback on your transcript.
- Book a Teacher: 1-to-1 online sessions of about 20 minutes from $5.
- Study tools: Mistake Notebook, Study Notes, English Improvement, flashcards and a personal study plan.
Full Access is $12 for 2 months, paid once by card in US dollars via PayPal. If you are applying for a degree abroad, you can also share your study plans so our overseas education advisers can suggest courses, but only if you want that.
An eight-week starting plan
- Week 1: take the free sample mock test to find your starting band, then read the Study Notes for your weakest module.
- Weeks 2–4: three or four focused sessions a week on your two weakest skills, plus one Writing task marked by the AI.
- Weeks 5–6: a full mock each weekend, then a careful review of every error in your Mistake Notebook.
- Weeks 7–8: Charged sets if you need 7+, a teacher session for Speaking or Writing, and the Quick Wrap checklist in the final days.
Use the Band Score Calculator after each mock to see how your section scores combine into an overall band.
Booking the real test
IELTS is owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment; IELTS Learning is independent of all three. Test sessions are available in and around Lagos, and you book through the official IELTS providers in Nigeria. Fees and dates change, so check the official booking sites before you commit to a date, and leave yourself enough weeks of preparation.
When you are ready to begin, create a free account and take the sample test this week. Good IELTS preparation in Lagos starts with knowing your real level, not guessing it.
