Who takes IELTS in Ahmedabad, and why
Ahmedabad sends students and families abroad for many different reasons. Twelfth-pass students from Gujarat Board and CBSE schools apply for undergraduate places in Canada, Australia and the UK. Engineering graduates from GTU-affiliated colleges, Nirma University and LD College of Engineering look at master's programmes in the USA, UK, Germany and Canada. Pharmacy and life-science graduates, from a state with a large pharmaceutical industry, often target research roles overseas, while architecture and design graduates from CEPT and similar institutions consider postgraduate study in Europe or Australia.
Then there are General Training candidates: professionals planning permanent residence, spouses joining a partner abroad, and families with relatives already settled in Canada, the UK or the USA. Many Gujarati families have cousins in Toronto, Leicester or New Jersey, so the question at home is often not "whether" but "which score, and by when".
Whatever your reason, the test has the same four modules, and sensible IELTS preparation in Ahmedabad begins with knowing exactly which score you need.
Academic or General Training: choosing your track
Choose Academic if you are applying to a university or college course, or to some professional registration bodies. Choose General Training if you are applying for work, migration or certain visa routes. Listening and Speaking are identical for both. Reading and Writing Task 1 differ: Academic Reading uses long texts from books and journals, and Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table, process or map; General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace texts, and Task 1 is a letter.
If you are unsure, check with the university, employer or immigration authority before booking. On IELTS Learning you pick your track when you sign up, and the practice sets, mock tests and writing prompts follow that choice.
One common situation in Ahmedabad: a couple where one partner is going to study and the other will follow on a dependant visa. The student usually needs Academic, while the partner may need General Training or no test at all, depending on the route. Check each person's requirement separately rather than assuming you need the same test.
Fitting preparation around college, work and the city
Ahmedabad days run long. If you travel from Bopal or Chandkheda to a college on SG Highway, or take the metro or BRTS to an office in Navrangpura or GIFT City, you may have only an hour or two at home in the evening. That is enough if you use it well.
- Weekday evenings (45–60 minutes): one Listening or Reading practice set, then five minutes in your Mistake Notebook.
- Travel time: Daily Vocabulary and flashcards on your phone, if you are a passenger rather than the one riding the scooter.
- Weekends: one Writing task with AI feedback, one Speaking session, and a full mock test every second weekend.
- Summer afternoons: when the heat keeps you indoors, use the long stretch for a full, timed mock.
Final-year students at Gujarat University or Ahmedabad University often prepare alongside semester exams. Plan your test date for after your exams, not in the middle of them, and keep festival weeks such as Navratri light.
