What 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
IELTS bands go from 0 to 9 in half bands. Band 7 describes a "good user": you handle complex language well, with occasional inaccuracies. Band 8 is a "very good user" with only rare, unsystematic errors. In practice, per module:
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40 correct; 8 needs around 35. The extra marks come from Part 3 and Part 4 detail and from never losing spelling marks.
- Reading: Academic band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40; General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. At 8, NOT GIVEN and heading questions must be close to perfect.
- Writing: at 7, you answer every part of the task with a clear position, use paragraphs logically, and show less common vocabulary with only occasional errors. Most of your sentences are error-free.
- Speaking: at 7, you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language with some flexibility, and are easy to understand throughout.
Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band, which you can check with our free Band Score Calculator.
The scores Ahmedabad students are often asked for
Requirements vary by country, institution, course and year, so treat these as typical ranges and always check the exact figure with the university, employer or immigration authority.
- UK universities, a long-standing choice for Gujarati families with relatives there, often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher scores for law, medicine and some postgraduate courses.
- Canada: colleges often ask for around 6.0 to 6.5 overall; universities and some programmes ask for more. Migration routes often reward higher bands with more points.
- Australia: many universities ask for around 6.5 overall, and some courses ask for 7.0 or more in every module. Skilled migration often values high scores.
- USA and Germany (for English-taught master's): many programmes often ask for 6.5 to 7.0.
- Professional registration, for example for nurses and some health roles, often needs 7.0 or higher in every module.
Notice the phrase "in each module". An overall 7 with a 6 in Writing may still fall short, so your plan should target your weakest module.
Why students plateau at 6 or 6.5
- Practising, not reviewing. Doing set after set without studying the mistakes repeats the same errors.
- Easy material. Practice that feels comfortable is usually below the level you need.
- Template writing. Memorised essays cap Task Response and Lexical Resource.
- Short Speaking answers. Band 7 needs extended, developed answers in Part 3.
A realistic eight-week plan from 6 to 7+
Weeks 1–2: diagnose. Take a full mock test. Group every lost mark by type. Choose two focus areas, usually Writing plus one other module.
Weeks 3–5: targeted practice.
- Four Listening and Reading sets a week, reviewed in your Mistake Notebook.
- Two Task 2 essays and one Task 1 a week, each rewritten after AI feedback on the four criteria.
- Three Speaking sessions a week using Part 3 prompts, focusing on longer answers.
- Daily vocabulary flashcards, aiming at topic words and collocations, not rare words.
Weeks 6–7: raise the difficulty. Switch to Charged sets for Listening and Reading. Book a 1-to-1 teacher session for Writing or Speaking, from ₹299, to get a human view on your weakest criterion.
Week 8: rehearse. Two full mock tests under exam conditions, spaced apart, then the Quick Wrap checklist the day before.
If you start nearer 5.5, double the timeline. A full band usually takes months, not weeks.
Expect your scores to move unevenly. Listening and Reading often rise first because they respond directly to practice and review. Writing and Speaking usually lag behind, then improve in a jump once new habits become automatic. A flat fortnight is normal; a flat two months means the plan needs to change, and that is a good moment to book a teacher session.
Charged sets: practice that stretches you
Our Charged Listening and Reading sets are built for students aiming at band 7 and above: faster speech, more speakers, denser passages and distractors that differ from the correct answer by a single word. If you score 7 on a Charged set, you are usually well placed on the real test.
