What 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
Bands run from 0 to 9 in half bands. Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band.
Listening and Reading are scored from correct answers out of 40. As a rough guide:
- Band 7: around 30/40 in Listening and around 30/40 in Academic Reading.
- Band 8: around 35/40 in Listening and Academic Reading.
- General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band, because the texts are less demanding.
Writing and Speaking are marked on four criteria. At band 7, examiners expect:
- Writing: a clear position throughout, well-developed ideas, logical paragraphs, a range of less common vocabulary used with some awareness of style, and frequent error-free sentences.
- Speaking: speaking at length without noticeable effort, flexible use of vocabulary including some idiomatic language, a mix of complex structures, and pronunciation that is easy to understand throughout.
Band 8 pushes each of these further: errors become rare, vocabulary is precise, and ideas are handled with real flexibility.
Typical requirements for Kolkata's popular destinations
Students and professionals from Kolkata commonly apply to the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Germany and the USA. Requirements vary by institution, course and visa route, and they change, so treat these as typical patterns only:
- UK and Ireland universities: many ask for 6.0–7.0 overall, often with a minimum in each module. Law, medicine, journalism and some top-ranked programmes often ask for 7.0 or more.
- Australia and Canada: university admission is often in the 6.5–7.0 range. For skilled migration, higher bands such as 7 or 8 in each module often earn more points.
- Germany and the USA: English-taught master's courses that accept IELTS often look for around 6.5–7.0.
- Nursing and healthcare registration abroad: these often require 7.0 in each module, sometimes with specific rules about Writing.
Always check the exact requirement with the university, employer or immigration authority before you book your test. If you are applying for an Academic course, you can share your study plans with us and, if you agree, our overseas education advisers can suggest universities and courses that match your target score.
Why "6 to 7" is harder than "5 to 6"
At band 6, most students can complete the tasks. Band 7 is about control. In Reading and Listening, it means fewer careless errors under time pressure. In Writing and Speaking, it means fewer mistakes, more precise words and a well-developed argument, not just a longer one.
Kolkata students with strong academic English, from engineering colleges or humanities departments, often reach 6.5 easily and then get stuck. The usual reason is a single module, most often Writing, pulling the average down. For example, 7.5 in Listening, 7 in Reading, 6 in Writing and 6.5 in Speaking averages 6.75, which rounds to 7 overall, but it would fail any requirement of 7 in each module.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
A typical timeframe is 8–12 weeks of steady work, though it varies.
- Week 1: diagnose. Take a full mock and enter your module bands into the Band Score Calculator to see what combinations reach your target.
- Weeks 2–4: fix the weakest module. For Writing, write three Task 2 essays a week and study which of the four criteria scores lowest. For Reading, drill the question types the Mistake Notebook shows you get wrong.
- Weeks 5–8: raise the ceiling. Switch to Charged Listening and Reading sets, which are harder than standard practice, with denser texts and trickier distractors. Book a 1-to-1 teacher session (about 20 minutes, from ₹299) for Speaking Part 3 or a Task 2 review.
- Weeks 9–12: test like the real thing. A full mock every week, under real timing, reviewing every error. Rewrite weak essays.
- Final week: go lighter. Use the Quick Wrap checklist and rest.
Habits of band 8 candidates
- They read and listen in English daily, not just for practice.
- They paraphrase constantly, both in Reading and in Writing introductions.
- They check their work, using the last minutes for spelling, plurals and word limits.
- They answer Part 3 with depth: reasons, examples, contrasts.
- They stop memorising phrases and start using vocabulary they genuinely understand.
