What 7, 7.5 and 8 mean in each module
Bands go from 0 to 9 in half bands, and your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded. Here is roughly what each level looks like.
- Listening: band 7 needs around 30 out of 40 correct; band 8 needs around 35. That is a few extra correct answers, often won through better spelling and Part 4 focus.
- Academic Reading: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band, so a GT candidate needs closer to 34 or 35 for a 7.
- Writing: band 7 means a clear position throughout Task 2, well-organised paragraphs, a good range of vocabulary with some less common words, and frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 means very few errors and ideas that are fully developed.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some idiomatic language naturally, and are easy to understand throughout. Band 8 is fluent with only occasional hesitation.
Writing and Speaking are where most students in the 6 to 6.5 range get stuck.
Typical requirements for Vadodara's popular destinations
Requirements vary by institution, course and year, so treat these as typical ranges and always check the exact figure with the university, employer or immigration authority.
- UK: many universities often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall for master's courses, with minimum module scores. Courses in law, medicine or teaching can be higher.
- Canada: universities often ask for around 6.5 overall. For skilled migration, higher scores typically earn more points, and General Training is the version usually used.
- Australia: universities often set 6.5 overall; migration points often increase at 7 and 8 in each module.
- USA: many universities accept IELTS, often at around 6.5 to 7.0 for graduate programmes.
- Professional registration: pharmacists and nurses, two professions with a strong presence among Baroda graduates, often face requirements of 7 or more in each module for registration abroad. Check with the relevant regulator.
Vadodara also has a large community of chemical and mechanical engineers from MSU and the city's industrial estates. If you are aiming at a master's in chemical or process engineering, look for minimum module scores, not just the overall band: a 7.0 overall with a 5.5 in Writing may not be enough.
Why students stall at 6 or 6.5
- Practising only what feels comfortable. Students repeat Listening, where they already score 7, and avoid Writing.
- No feedback loop. Writing essays that nobody marks does not show you what to fix.
- Memorised language that sounds unnatural in Speaking and Writing.
- Not reading enough to handle Academic Passage 3 under time pressure.
A realistic eight-week plan from 6 to 7+
This assumes about an hour a day on weekdays and two to three hours at weekends, which is realistic for most MSU students or working engineers.
- Week 1: take a full mock to set a baseline. Note your weakest module and weakest criterion.
- Weeks 2 to 3: focus on the weakest module. If it is Writing, write three Task 2 essays a week and rewrite each one using the criterion feedback.
- Week 4: second full mock. Compare with week 1.
- Weeks 5 to 6: move to Charged Listening and Reading sets two or three times a week. Continue Writing, and book a teacher session for Speaking.
- Week 7: third full mock, then a teacher session to review your best essay and a practice Speaking interview.
- Week 8: final mock early in the week, then light revision with the Mistake Notebook and the Quick Wrap checklist.
Charged sets: practice harder than the test
Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets built for students aiming at band 7 and above. They use denser passages, faster speech and closer distractors. If you can score well on Charged sets, a normal test paper often feels easier.
Use them after your basics are solid, not as a starting point. Two Charged sets a week, with careful review, is plenty alongside normal practice.
Reaching IELTS band 7 when time is tight
Vadodara professionals in shift-based industries often prepare in short windows. Use the personal study plan to schedule sessions around your shifts, use flashcards for commuting time, and keep full mocks for weekly off days. Book a Teacher (about 20 minutes, from ₹299) is especially useful at this level, because a teacher can pinpoint the difference between a 6.5 and a 7 essay.
Check your module scores in the Band Score Calculator, then start free. Full Access to everything, including all Charged sets, is ₹999 for 2 months.
