What band 7, 7.5 and 8 really mean
Each module is scored from 0 to 9 in half bands, and the overall band is the average of the four. Here is what a band 7 or above looks like in practice.
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 correct answers out of 40; band 8 needs around 35. Small spelling and plural errors make a big difference at this level.
- Reading: Academic band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. Band 8 leaves very little room for NOT GIVEN errors.
- Writing: band 7 means you answer every part of the task, organise ideas clearly, use less common vocabulary with some awareness of style, and produce frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 means errors are rare.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idioms and flexible vocabulary, and are easy to understand throughout, even with an accent. Band 8 sounds fluent and natural with only occasional slips.
An overall 7.5 is often made of uneven scores, for example 8.0 Listening, 8.0 Reading, 7.0 Writing and 7.0 Speaking. Knowing your own pattern tells you where your next half band will come from.
Why students from Lucknow aim for 7+
Band 7 or above often comes up in the plans of students and professionals here.
- Postgraduate study in the UK: many universities ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with competitive courses and subjects like law or journalism often at the upper end.
- Healthcare careers abroad: graduates of the city's medical and nursing colleges often find that registration bodies in countries such as the UK, Ireland and Australia set high band requirements, frequently 7 or above in each module.
- Migration to Canada or Australia: points-based systems often reward higher English scores, so families sometimes aim for 7, 8 or more to strengthen an application.
- Top universities in the USA, Canada and Australia: selective programmes may ask for 7.0 or more overall with minimum sub-scores.
These are typical patterns only. Requirements change and differ by course and authority, so always check the exact score with the university, employer or immigration authority before setting your target.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
If your mock tests show around 6.0 to 6.5, this six-to-ten-week structure works for many students. Adjust it to your own time and starting point.
Weeks 1 to 2: diagnose precisely
- Take two full mock tests under exam conditions.
- In Listening and Reading, label every mistake: spelling, paraphrase, NOT GIVEN, time pressure.
- In Writing, look at your four criteria bands. In Speaking, read your transcript for repeated words and short answers.
Weeks 3 to 6: attack the weakest criterion
- Listening/Reading: daily timed sets, plus a review of every explanation. Move up to Charged sets when you reach about 30 out of 40.
- Writing: two Task 2 essays a week, focusing on one criterion each time. Rewrite one essay using the feedback.
- Speaking: three sessions a week with our prompts. Practise extending Part 3 answers with reasons, examples and comparisons.
Weeks 7 onwards: rehearse and refine
- One full mock per week.
- One or two teacher sessions to test Writing and Speaking under pressure.
- Use Quick Wrap in the final days and rest properly before the test.
Charged sets: built for this jump
Regular sets help you reach band 6.5. To score 7.5 or 8 consistently, you need practice that is harder than the test. Charged Listening and Reading sets use faster audio, trickier distractors and denser passages. Expect lower scores at first; when you return to standard mocks, they will feel more comfortable.
Writing and Speaking at band 7: the details that matter
Moving from 6.5 to 7 in Writing is usually about precision: a clear position throughout Task 2, a proper overview in Task 1, and fewer article and agreement errors. In Speaking, it is about extending answers naturally and using less common vocabulary correctly.
Our AI feedback estimates each of the four criteria, so you see where the half band is being lost. Book a Teacher sessions, from ₹299 for about 20 minutes, are particularly useful at this stage, when a teacher can point to the two or three changes that matter most.
