What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
IELTS bands go from 0 to 9 in half bands, and your overall score is the average of the four modules, rounded. A 7 is described as a "good user": you handle complex language well, with occasional inaccuracies. An 8 is a "very good user", with only rare errors.
In practice, per module:
- Listening: band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40 correct; 7.5 and 8 need a few more each, so every spelling slip matters.
- Academic Reading: band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 means a clear position, well-developed ideas, logical paragraphs, a good range of vocabulary and frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 needs all of that, more consistently.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use some less common vocabulary and idiomatic language, and are easy to understand throughout.
Use the free Band Score Calculator to see how your module scores combine. Sometimes a stronger Listening score can lift your overall band, but many requirements also set a minimum in every module.
The scores Mumbai applicants are often asked for
Requirements vary widely and change, so treat these as typical ranges only, and always check the exact figure with the university, employer or authority.
- UK and Ireland postgraduate study, popular with Mumbai's commerce, finance and management graduates: often 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with highly competitive courses and universities often asking for 7.0 or more.
- USA master's programmes, a common route for engineers from IIT Bombay, VJTI and the city's private colleges: many universities accept IELTS, often with requirements around 6.5 to 7.0.
- Canada and Australia for study: often 6.0 to 6.5 overall for many programmes, higher for some. For skilled migration, higher IELTS scores often earn more points, which is why many applicants aim for 7 or 8 in each module.
- Nurses and healthcare professionals heading for the UK, Ireland or Australia: registration bodies often ask for 7.0 in each module, and the rules are specific, so check them carefully.

Where band 7 is usually lost
Students stuck at 6.5 usually have one or two specific problems, not a general weakness:
- Listening and Reading: careless spelling, ignoring word limits, NOT GIVEN errors, and running out of time in Reading Passage 3.
- Writing: an unclear position in Task 2, no overview in Task 1, memorised phrases, and grammar errors in complex sentences.
- Speaking: short answers, rehearsed responses, and repeated basic vocabulary.
Find yours by taking a full mock and reviewing it honestly.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
For many students, moving up one band takes eight to twelve weeks of focused work. A practical structure:
- Week 1: baseline. Take a full mock and list your top three error types per module.
- Weeks 2 to 5: fix the foundations. Target those error types with practice sets, Study Notes and English Improvement. Write two Task 2 essays a week and read the AI feedback on each criterion.
- Weeks 6 to 8: raise the difficulty. Move to the Charged sets and full mocks every one to two weeks.
- Weeks 9 onwards: polish. Book one or two 1-to-1 teacher sessions (about 20 minutes, from ₹299) for Speaking and Writing, and use the Quick Wrap checklist in the final days.
Training harder with Charged sets
Standard practice sets show you the format. To reach 7 and beyond, you need material that stretches you. IELTS Learning's Charged Listening and Reading sets are harder: denser passages, trickier distractors and faster speech. Scoring well on them builds a safety margin, so the real test feels manageable even on an off day.
Fitting a band 7 plan into Mumbai life
Most people aiming for 7+ are juggling final-year exams, a job in BKC or Andheri, or application deadlines. Short, regular practice beats occasional marathons. Use your commute for vocabulary and Mistake Notebook review, keep weekday evenings for one focused task, and protect a weekend morning for a full mock.
