IELTS Reading Practice for Nagpur Students: Timed, Explained, Tracked

Reading is the module where good students lose marks to the clock and to three words: TRUE, FALSE, NOT GIVEN. These sets let you practise every question type in the computer format, then see exactly why each answer is right or wrong.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from ₹299

What the Reading test looks like

You have 60 minutes for 40 questions across three sections. On the computer test there is no extra transfer time, so the hour is everything.

  • Academic Reading uses three long passages from books, journals and magazines, often on science, history or social topics.
  • General Training Reading starts with short everyday texts such as notices and adverts, moves to workplace documents, and ends with one longer general passage.

The question types overlap. You will meet TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN (or YES/NO/NOT GIVEN for opinions), Matching Headings, Matching Information, Matching Features, summary, sentence and note completion, multiple choice and short answers.

A timing plan that holds up

Twenty minutes per passage sounds simple, but passages get harder as you go. A plan many students find useful:

  1. Passage 1: aim for about 17 minutes.
  2. Passage 2: about 20 minutes.
  3. Passage 3: whatever is left, roughly 23 minutes.

Within each passage, read the questions first, then the text with purpose. If a question takes more than about ninety seconds, flag it and move on. The flag-for-review button exists so you can come back without losing your place.

The traps that cost Nagpur students the most marks

NOT GIVEN versus FALSE

FALSE means the passage says the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage does not tell you either way. Engineering and science students, used to reasoning things out, often answer FALSE because a statement seems logically wrong. In IELTS your own knowledge does not count; only the text does.

Matching Headings

The heading must match the main idea of the whole paragraph, not a detail in one sentence. A paragraph about rising costs of electric vehicles may mention batteries several times, but "battery technology" could still be the wrong heading. Read the first two sentences and the last one before you choose.

Word limits and summaries

"NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" is strict. Three words is wrong, however sensible. In word-box summaries, check grammar: if the gap follows "a", you need a singular noun.

Synonyms

The question rarely uses the same words as the passage. "Decline" in the question might be "fell" or "dropped off" in the text. Building synonym range through flashcards and Daily Vocabulary pays off directly here.

Practising Reading in a Nagpur routine

Reading practice fits into broken time better than any other module, which helps if your days are full.

  • Between lectures at RTMNU or an engineering college: one passage with its questions, timed at 20 minutes.
  • Medical students on wards: a General Training or Academic passage during a quieter gap, reviewed later that evening.
  • Weekend: a full 60-minute Reading test, early in the day before the Nagpur heat makes concentration harder.

Many students in the city read Marathi or Hindi newspapers daily. Adding one serious English article a day, from a science or opinion section, gets your eyes used to the long, dense sentences of Academic Reading.

If you are applying through the General Training route, perhaps for work in Canada or Australia, practise skimming practical texts quickly: timetables, job adverts, workplace policies. Section 1 rewards speed, and the marks you bank there buy time for the harder final passage. Keep a timer running even in casual practice, so speed becomes a habit rather than something you only try on test day.

How IELTS Learning Reading practice works

There are 52 Reading practice sets for Academic and General Training, all in the computer-delivered format: highlighter, notes, question navigator, drag-and-drop for headings and word-box summaries. After each set you see:

  • your score and estimated band;
  • the correct answer for every question;
  • an explanation pointing to the part of the passage that decides it.

Every wrong answer goes into your Mistake Notebook automatically. Reviewing it weekly is one of the quickest ways to stop making the same NOT GIVEN error twice.

Charged sets for band 7 and above

For Academic Reading, band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40; General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. Once you are scoring steadily in the high twenties, move to Charged sets. These use harder passages and closer distractors, so the real test feels comfortable by comparison.

Questions from students in Nagpur

How many IELTS Reading answers do I need for band 7?

For Academic Reading, band 7 typically needs about 30 correct answers out of 40. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band, because its texts are considered easier. The exact conversion can vary slightly between test versions.

Is Academic Reading harder than General Training Reading?

The Academic passages are longer and denser, but the General Training scale is stricter, so neither is simply easier. Choose your track based on what your university, employer or immigration route requires, not on which Reading test sounds easier.

How do I stop running out of time in IELTS Reading?

Set a time limit for each passage, flag hard questions and return later, and avoid reading the whole passage in detail before looking at questions. Timed practice sets help you find your natural speed and improve it.

Do the Reading explanations show where the answer is?

Yes. Each explanation points to the part of the passage that decides the answer and explains why the other options are wrong. This is especially useful for NOT GIVEN and Matching Headings questions.

Can I practise IELTS Reading on my phone in Nagpur?

Yes, the sets work on phones, which suits short gaps in the day. For full timed tests, a laptop is closer to the real computer test and makes highlighting easier.
