How the Reading module works
The Reading test is 60 minutes long, with 40 questions across three sections. On the computer-delivered test you type or click your answers directly. On paper you write them on the answer sheet within the same 60 minutes, so transfer time comes out of your reading time.
Academic Reading uses three long passages from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. Topics range from archaeology to urban planning to animal behaviour. Each passage gets harder.
General Training Reading begins with short everyday texts such as adverts, timetables and notices, moves on to workplace texts like job descriptions and staff policies, and ends with one longer passage on a general topic. The early sections feel easier, which is why GT needs more correct answers than Academic for the same band.
The question types you will meet
On IELTS Learning, our 52 practice sets cover all the main types, with an explanation for every answer:
- TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN (and YES / NO / NOT GIVEN for opinions)
- Matching Headings to paragraphs
- Matching Information: which paragraph contains a given detail
- Summary completion, with or without a word box
- Multiple choice
- Sentence completion, table and flow-chart completion, and matching features
Different types reward different reading habits. Matching Headings needs you to grasp the main idea of a paragraph. Matching Information needs you to scan for a specific detail, often in a paragraph you have already read.
The two traps that cost the most marks
NOT GIVEN
Most students lose marks here by using their own knowledge. If the passage says a bridge was built in 1890, and the statement says it was the first steel bridge in the region, the answer is NOT GIVEN unless the passage says so, even if you happen to know it is true.
Ask one question: does the passage contradict the statement (FALSE), confirm it (TRUE), or simply not deal with it (NOT GIVEN)?
Matching Headings
The trap is matching a word in the heading to a word in the paragraph. Writers of the test deliberately put a key word from a wrong heading into the paragraph. Read the whole paragraph, decide what it is mainly about in a few words of your own, then choose the heading.
A timing strategy that works
A common plan for Academic Reading:
- Passage 1: about 17 minutes.
- Passage 2: about 20 minutes.
- Passage 3: about 23 minutes.
Never spend more than two minutes on a single question. Flag it, move on and come back. On our mock tests, the flag for review button and question navigator let you practise exactly this habit.
For GT, aim to finish the first two sections quickly so you have at least 25 minutes for the final passage.
IELTS Reading practice for Chennai students
Chennai students often have an advantage here. If you studied engineering or science at Anna University, IIT Madras, SRM or VIT, you are used to dense texts. What usually needs work is the opposite skill: reading quickly without trying to understand every word, and coping with humanities topics such as history or sociology that engineering courses rarely include.
A few practical habits:
- Read outside your subject. Spend fifteen minutes a day on long-form articles about history, psychology or the environment.
- Use your commute. A single Reading passage with a 20-minute timer fits a metro ride from Washermanpet to the airport. Save full tests for home.
- Build vocabulary daily. Synonyms are central to Reading, because the questions rarely use the same words as the passage. Daily Vocabulary gives you five new words each day, free.
- Review every wrong answer. Your mistakes are saved to the Mistake Notebook automatically. Go back a week later and try them again.
Charged sets for band 7 and above
If you are scoring 30 or more out of 40 in Academic Reading, the standard sets may stop stretching you. Our Charged Reading sets use harder passages and more demanding distractors, closer to the toughest passages you may meet. They are designed for students aiming at band 7 and above who need to make their accuracy reliable rather than lucky.
