IELTS Mock Test in Chennai: Full Computer-Style Practice at Home

A full mock test is the closest you can get to test day without paying the exam fee. On IELTS Learning you take it online from anywhere in Chennai, on screens that work like the computer-delivered IELTS.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from ₹299

Why a full mock test matters

Practice sets teach you skills. A full IELTS mock test tells you whether those skills hold up for nearly three hours. Plenty of students score well on a single Reading passage and then lose concentration in Passage 3 of a full test, or write a good Task 2 essay only when Task 1 has not already used up their energy.

A mock test shows you:

  • Your realistic band in each module, under time pressure.
  • Where your concentration drops.
  • Whether your timing plan for Reading and Writing actually works.
  • How comfortable you are with the computer-delivered format.

How our mock tests work

IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests, each with all four modules. The screens are built to behave like the computer-delivered IELTS:

  • A visible timer for each section.
  • A question navigator so you can jump between questions and see which are unanswered.
  • Flag for review to mark questions you want to come back to.
  • A highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages.
  • Drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summary questions.

Listening and Reading are marked instantly, with a band score and the correct answers. Writing gets an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback. Speaking prompts are timed, including the 1-minute preparation and 2-minute talk for the cue card, and you get AI feedback on your transcript.

Taking an IELTS mock test at home in Chennai

A mock test is only useful if you treat it like the real thing. That takes some planning in a busy household or a shared flat close to your college.

  1. Pick a quiet slot. Early morning on a weekend often works best, before traffic noise on the main road and before the household is fully awake.
  2. Use wired headphones for Listening, and check the volume before you start. Ceiling fans and air-conditioners can mask quiet audio.
  3. Plug in your laptop. If you are using a phone, close other apps and turn on Do Not Disturb.
  4. No pauses. Do not stop the Listening audio or extend the Reading timer. In the real test you cannot.
  5. Sit the sections in order: Listening, Reading, Writing. Do Speaking the same day or the next.
  6. Keep water, nothing else. No dictionary, no phone, no notes.

If you plan to take the computer-delivered test, practise on a laptop with a keyboard so you get used to typing your essays. If you are booked on paper, write your Writing answers by hand and type them in afterwards for feedback.

Using your results

The band is the least interesting part of the result. What matters is why you lost marks.

  • Listening: were the mistakes spelling, plurals, numbers, or missing an answer while the speaker moved on?
  • Reading: which question types did you get wrong, and in which passage? Many students lose most marks in TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN and in the last passage.
  • Writing: compare the four criteria. A high Task Response and low Grammatical Range and Accuracy needs a different plan from the reverse.
  • Speaking: read your transcript. Long pauses, repeated words and very short Part 1 answers are easy to spot on paper.

Every wrong Listening and Reading answer goes into your Mistake Notebook automatically, so you can retry those questions later instead of forgetting them. Use the free Band Score Calculator to see how module scores combine into your overall band.

How many mock tests should you take?

There is no magic number, but a pattern that works for many students is:

  • One at the start, to find your baseline.
  • One every week or ten days during preparation, with targeted practice in between.
  • Two or three in the final fortnight, spaced out, so you peak on the day.

Taking a mock every day is usually a mistake. You burn through tests without fixing the problems they reveal. The work between mocks is where the improvement happens.

Questions from students in Chennai

Is the free IELTS mock test a full test or just a sample of questions?

It is a complete mock test covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You can take it without a card, and it gives you instant Listening and Reading bands.

Are your mock tests computer-based or paper-based?

They are on screen and designed to work like the computer-delivered IELTS, with a timer, question navigator, flag for review, highlighter and drag-and-drop. If you are sitting the paper test, you can still use them and handwrite your Writing practice first.

How accurate is the band score from an online mock test?

Listening and Reading bands are calculated from your correct answers, so they are a good guide if you took the test under proper conditions. Writing and Speaking bands are AI estimates, useful for spotting patterns, and a teacher session gives you a human view.

Can I take a mock test on my phone while travelling in Chennai?

You can practise individual sets on your phone during a metro or train journey, but take full mock tests at home on a laptop if possible. Background noise and a small screen make it harder to judge your real level.

When should I stop taking mock tests before my exam?

Most students do their last full mock two or three days before the test. Use the final day or two for light review, your Mistake Notebook and the Quick Wrap checklist rather than another full test.
