Why a full mock matters
Doing one Reading passage at a time is useful, but test day is different. You sit Listening, Reading and Writing back to back, and your concentration in the last Writing task matters as much as your first Listening answer. A full mock test teaches you:
- Stamina: keeping focus for nearly three hours.
- Timing: how long you really take on Matching Headings or a Task 1 chart.
- Format confidence: knowing exactly what each screen looks like before the real thing.
Many students in Jalandhar have practised mostly on paper. If you have booked the computer-delivered test, practising on a screen first removes a lot of surprises.
How IELTS Learning mock tests work
IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, for your chosen track (Academic or General Training). The screens work like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- A timer that counts down for each section.
- A question navigator so you can jump between questions.
- Flag for review for answers you want to check again.
- A highlighter and notes for Reading passages.
- Drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries.
When you finish, Listening and Reading are scored instantly with a band. Writing receives an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and Speaking receives AI feedback on your transcript.
Taking a mock at home in Jalandhar
Home is not an exam room, so set it up properly:
- Choose your time. Late evening is often quieter than the afternoon, when traffic, generators and street vendors are at their loudest. Early morning works well too.
- Tell your family. In a busy joint household, a note on the door saying you are in a test for three hours can save you from interruptions.
- Use headphones for Listening, and keep the volume at a level you would expect in a test centre.
- Put your phone in another room. No WhatsApp, no checking answers.
- Do not pause. If the power cuts out or the internet drops, note how much time was left and continue as soon as you can, but treat it as a real lesson in staying calm.
- Write Task 2 by typing if you will take the computer test, or by hand if you will take the paper test, so your speed is realistic.
If you share a room in a hostel near LPU, the library or an empty classroom on a weekend can work just as well, as long as you can use headphones.
You do not need to travel anywhere to sit an IELTS mock test in Jalandhar. Whether you live in Urban Estate, Rama Mandi, the Cantonment area or a village towards Nakodar or Kartarpur, the same full test opens on your laptop. That also means you can repeat the experience as often as you need, rather than waiting for a centre to schedule its next mock day.
Using your results
A band score alone does not tell you what to do next. After each mock:
- Open your Mistake Notebook. Wrong Listening and Reading answers are saved automatically, so you can see patterns: are you losing marks on spelling, on NOT GIVEN, on maps?
- Read the Writing feedback criterion by criterion. If Coherence and Cohesion is lower than the others, your paragraphing needs work, not your vocabulary.
- Check Speaking feedback for repeated filler words and very short answers.
- Use the Band Score Calculator to see how your module scores combine into an overall band, and which module would lift it most.
How many mocks to take
There is no magic number, but a common pattern works well:
- One at the start to set a baseline.
- One every week or two while you practise individual modules in between.
- Two or three in the final fortnight to settle your timing.
Taking a mock every day without reviewing it is not progress. One mock with a careful review is worth more than three rushed ones.
