Why full mock tests matter
Practice sets teach you question types. Mock tests teach you the exam. Sitting all four sections in one go shows you things that short exercises never reveal: whether your concentration drops in Reading Passage 3, whether you rush Writing Task 2 because Task 1 took too long, and how tired you feel by the end of Listening.
The real test is long. Listening takes about 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes and Writing 60 minutes, usually back to back, with Speaking (11 to 14 minutes) on the same day or a different one. Stamina is part of the score, and the only way to build it is to practise at full length.
How our mock tests work
IELTS Learning offers 15 complete mock tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, for both Academic and General Training. They follow the official format and are designed to feel like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- A visible timer for each section.
- A question navigator, so you can jump between questions and see which ones are unanswered.
- Flag for review, to mark questions you want to come back to.
- A highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages.
- Drag-and-drop answers for matching headings and word-box summaries.
You get an instant band score for Listening and Reading. Writing is given an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria, with feedback, and Speaking responses get AI feedback on the transcript.
If you are choosing between the paper and computer formats at a test session in Hyderabad, practising on these screens helps you decide. Some students find typing essays faster and tidier; others prefer handwriting.
Making your home feel like an exam room
Hyderabad homes are rarely silent. There may be traffic noise, construction nearby, a pressure cooker whistle or a family TV in the next room. You will not make it perfect, but you can get close:
- Choose your slot. Early morning on a weekend is often the quietest time in most parts of the city.
- Tell your family. Ask for three uninterrupted hours and put your phone in another room.
- Charge your laptop and check your Wi-Fi before you begin, so nothing stops you halfway.
- Use wired or good over-ear headphones for Listening, as you will at a computer-delivered test.
- Do not pause. If you would not get the time back in the real exam, do not take it back at home.
- Keep only what is allowed. No dictionary, no translation app, no notes.
Using your results properly
A mock test score is only useful if you act on it. After each test:
- Open your Mistake Notebook, where wrong Listening and Reading answers are saved automatically. Sort them by question type, not by test.
- Look for patterns. Are you losing marks on NOT GIVEN? On spelling in Listening Part 1? On map labelling?
- Read the Writing feedback criterion by criterion. If Coherence and Cohesion is consistently lowest, that is your next week's focus.
- Use the free Band Score Calculator to see how your module scores combine into an overall band.
Then spend the following days on targeted practice sets before you sit another full mock.
Paper or computer at your test session?
Test sessions are available in and around Hyderabad in both formats, booked through IDP or the British Council. If you have not decided yet, take one mock on screen and time yourself writing one essay by hand. Compare your word count, your spelling and how tired your hand feels. Check the official booking sites for current dates and fees.
How many mock tests should you take?
There is no magic number, but a common pattern works well:
- One at the start to find your baseline in each module.
- One every week or ten days during preparation, with focused practice in between.
- Two in the final fortnight, at the same time of day as your booked test.
Taking a mock every day usually does not help. You need time between tests to fix what the last one showed you. Most students find that five to eight full mocks, spread out, are plenty.
