Why a full mock beats more practice questions
Practice sets teach skills. A full mock test teaches you something different: how your concentration, timing and nerves behave across nearly three hours. Many students who score well on individual Reading passages lose marks in the third passage of a real test because they have never read for a full hour without stopping.
A mock also tells you where your band actually is. Without one, you are guessing whether you are a 6 or a 6.5, and that guess affects which universities you shortlist and how soon you book the real test.
How our computer-based IELTS practice test works
IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests, each with Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, for both Academic and General Training.
- The screen. A countdown timer, a question navigator along the bottom, flag-for-review, a highlighter and a notes tool, plus drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries. These match how the computer-delivered test behaves.
- Listening. The recording plays once, questions follow the order of the audio, and you get the short checking time at the end that the computer test allows.
- Reading. Three passages, 40 questions, 60 minutes, with Academic or General Training texts depending on your track.
- Writing. Task 1 and Task 2 with a word counter. Your essays receive an AI-estimated band on each of the four criteria with comments.
- Speaking. Parts 1, 2 and 3, with a real one-minute preparation timer for the cue card and a two-minute speaking limit. The AI gives feedback on your transcript.
Listening and Reading are marked instantly, with the raw score and band shown side by side. The first full mock is free, with no card needed.
Taking a mock in Trichy under real exam conditions
Your home is not a test centre, but you can get close. A few practical points for Trichy homes and hostels:
- Pick your hour carefully. Temple bells, wedding music and traffic on the main roads are part of life here. Early morning or late evening is often quieter, especially in areas near busy junctions.
- Plan for power. Charge your laptop or phone fully. If your area has occasional cuts, a charged device means a timed Listening section will not be ruined halfway.
- Use headphones for Listening. A ceiling fan on full speed is surprisingly loud on a recording.
- Sit at a table. Doing Reading on a bed in the afternoon heat is not how the test will feel.
- No breaks, no phone. Do Listening, Reading and Writing back to back, as on test day. Speaking can be done the same day or the next.
- Hostel students at NIT or the colleges around Thuvakudi can book a quiet hour in a reading room or library and use earphones.
Using your mock results properly
The score is the least interesting part. After each mock:
- Listening and Reading: open the answer review. For every mistake, decide whether it was vocabulary, spelling, timing or a misunderstood question type. Wrong answers are saved to your Mistake Notebook automatically.
- Writing: look at which of the four criteria scored lowest. A low Task Response score needs a different fix from a low Grammatical Range and Accuracy score.
- Speaking: read the transcript. You will notice repeated filler words and unfinished sentences you never hear while speaking.
You can convert any raw score with the free Band Score Calculator and compare it with your target.
How many mocks should you take?
There is no magic number, but a pattern that works for most students:
- One at the start to find your baseline.
- One every 7 to 10 days while you practise skills in between.
- Two or three in the final fortnight, spaced so you have time to review each properly.
Taking a mock every day usually means none get reviewed. Six to ten full mocks over a preparation period of two months is plenty for most people. If you are aiming for 7.5 or more, the harder Charged Listening and Reading sets make a good addition between mocks.
