Why mock tests matter more than extra study
Most students know more English than their first IELTS score suggests. What lets them down is timing, stamina and unfamiliarity with the format: running out of time on Reading Passage 3, losing focus in Listening Part 4, or writing a strong Task 2 but leaving Task 1 half done.
A full mock test exposes those problems in a way that practising one question type at a time cannot. It also tells you something more useful than "you need to improve": it tells you which module, which question type and which part of the test is costing you half a band.
How our mock tests work
Each of our 15 full mock tests covers all four modules, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, in the official order and timing. The screens are built to behave like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- a running timer and a question navigator along the bottom
- flag for review so you can mark a question and come back
- a highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages
- drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries
Listening and Reading are marked instantly, with a band score and the correct answers. Writing gets an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and Speaking gets AI feedback on your transcript. The Mistake Notebook saves every wrong answer so you can review them later.
Taking a mock under exam conditions at home in Vizag
A mock is only useful if you treat it like the real thing. That is harder at home than in a test room, so set things up properly:
- Pick a quiet slot of about three hours. For many Vizag families that means early morning or late evening, away from the noise of traffic, construction or a busy household.
- Use a laptop if you can. The real computer-delivered test uses a keyboard and mouse, and typing your essays is a skill in itself.
- Wear wired or good headphones and do Listening in one go, with no pausing or replaying.
- Charge everything first. If you live in an area where power cuts are common during storms or the monsoon, keep your laptop and router on backup or plugged in fully before you start.
- Phone face down in another room. No dictionaries, no notes, no breaks between Listening, Reading and Writing.
- Do Speaking separately, ideally the same day, using the cue-card timer and speaking aloud.
Using your results
Do not just look at the band and move on. Spend at least as long reviewing a mock as you spent taking it.
- Listening and Reading: sort your errors by question type. If most are in NOT GIVEN or Matching Headings, that is your next week of practice.
- Writing: look at the four criteria separately. A 6.5 overall with 5.5 in Grammatical Range and Accuracy tells you exactly what to fix.
- Speaking: read your transcript. Repeated words, unfinished sentences and very short answers in Part 3 are common patterns.
Use the free Band Score Calculator to see how module scores combine into your overall band, which matters if your university or visa has a minimum per module.
How many mocks should you take?
There is no magic number, but a pattern that works for many students is:
- One mock at the start, to set your baseline.
- One every week or fortnight during preparation, with focused practice in between.
- Two or three in the final fortnight, to build stamina and confirm you are consistently at your target.
Taking a mock every day is rarely helpful. Without time to review and practise, you just repeat the same mistakes faster.
If you are a final-year student at Andhra University or GITAM, plan your mocks around internal tests and project deadlines rather than squeezing one in the night before a semester exam. A tired mock gives you a misleading band and very little useful information.
