IELTS Reading Practice in Tiruchirappalli: Sets, Strategy, Traps

Reading is where many strong Trichy students lose the half band they need. The passages are not difficult English for an engineering or science graduate, but 40 questions in 60 minutes, with no extra transfer time, is a real test of method.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from ₹299

What the IELTS Reading test asks of you

Reading lasts 60 minutes and has 40 questions across three passages. There is no separate time to transfer answers, so everything must be finished inside the hour.

  • Academic Reading uses three long texts from books, journals and magazines, sometimes with diagrams. Topics range from archaeology to urban planning.
  • General Training Reading starts with everyday texts such as notices and advertisements, moves to workplace documents, and ends with one longer general text.

Band 7 in Academic Reading typically needs about 30 correct answers out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, so GT candidates should not assume the test is easier.

Why Trichy students often find Reading harder than expected

Many students here studied engineering, science or commerce in English, and read technical material comfortably. The difficulty is usually different: IELTS passages are about unfamiliar subjects written in a magazine or academic-essay style, with long sentences and plenty of paraphrase. A mechanical engineer from a college on the Thanjavur road may read a turbine manual easily and still slow down on a passage about medieval trade routes.

Students who did their schooling in Tamil medium and moved to English at college are often excellent at careful reading but slower at skimming. That is a trainable skill, not a weakness in English.

The question types you will meet

Our 52 practice sets cover every common type, each with explanations:

  • TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN (or YES / NO / NOT GIVEN for opinions)
  • Matching Headings to paragraphs
  • Matching Information (which paragraph contains a given detail)
  • Matching features such as people or dates to statements
  • Summary, note, table and sentence completion, with or without a word box
  • Multiple choice with one or more answers
  • Short-answer questions and diagram labels

Two traps worth studying separately

NOT GIVEN

FALSE means the passage says the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage simply does not tell you. The most common error is using your own knowledge: if the text says a dam improved irrigation, and the statement says it improved irrigation and reduced floods, the floods part is NOT GIVEN unless the passage actually says so. Engineers, who naturally fill logical gaps, fall into this regularly.

Matching Headings

The trap is matching a heading to one striking word in the paragraph rather than to its main idea. Read the first two sentences and the last sentence of the paragraph, decide its purpose in your own words, then look at the list. Our drag-and-drop screen lets you move headings around like the real test, so you can change your mind cleanly.

A timing method that holds up

  1. Spend about 17 to 20 minutes per passage, leaving a few minutes at the end. Passage 3 is usually the hardest, so do not overspend on Passage 1.
  2. Read the questions first, then skim the passage for its structure in two or three minutes.
  3. Answers for most types follow passage order; Matching Headings and Matching Information do not.
  4. Never leave a blank. There is no negative marking.
  5. Flag and move on when a question takes more than about 90 seconds. The navigator shows flagged questions so you can return.

How to practise Reading in Trichy between classes and shifts

You do not need a free afternoon. Reading divides well into short blocks:

  • On a short break or the bus to campus: one passage on your phone, timed at 20 minutes.
  • Weekday evenings: two passages, then a full review of every wrong answer.
  • Weekends: a complete 60-minute section on a laptop under test conditions.

Every wrong answer goes to your Mistake Notebook, so before your next session you can revisit the questions you missed and check whether you would get them right now. Add five words a day with Daily Vocabulary to build the paraphrase awareness that Reading rewards.

Charged sets for band 7 and above

If you are already scoring 30 or more out of 40, standard sets stop stretching you. Our Charged Reading sets use denser passages, closer paraphrase and more demanding distractors, designed for students aiming at band 7 or more, which is common for NIT and research applicants targeting competitive programmes abroad.

Questions from students in Tiruchirappalli

How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS Reading?

In Academic Reading, band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band. The free Band Score Calculator shows the approximate conversion for both.

I did my schooling in Tamil medium. Will IELTS Reading be very hard for me?

Not necessarily. Many Tamil-medium students read carefully and accurately; what they usually need is faster skimming and familiarity with question types. Short timed passages every day build that speed within a few weeks.

Are the Reading sets different for Academic and General Training?

Yes. When you choose your track, the platform shows the right Reading sets, with long academic texts for Academic and everyday, workplace and general texts for General Training.

Can I practise IELTS Reading on my phone while commuting in Trichy?

Yes, single passages work well on a phone during a bus ride or a break between classes. Do your full 60-minute sections on a laptop, though, to match the real computer-delivered screen.

What are Charged Reading sets?

They are harder sets for students aiming at band 7 or more, with denser texts and closer paraphrase. Use them once you are reliably scoring around 30 or more on standard sets.
