What IELTS Reading actually tests
You get 60 minutes for 40 questions across three passages. There is no extra time to transfer answers on the computer test, so the 60 minutes is everything.
- Academic Reading uses long passages from books, journals and magazines. Topics range from marine biology to urban planning.
- General Training Reading starts with short everyday texts (notices, adverts, timetables), moves to workplace texts (job descriptions, policies), and ends with one longer general passage.
For band 7, Academic candidates typically need around 30 correct answers out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, so do not assume GT is easier.
The question types you will meet
Our 52 practice sets cover all the main types, with explanations for every answer:
- TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN (and YES / NO / NOT GIVEN for opinions)
- Matching Headings to paragraphs
- Matching Information (which paragraph contains a given detail)
- Summary completion with a word box, using drag-and-drop
- Sentence, note and table completion with a word limit
- Multiple choice with one or more answers
- Matching features such as researchers to findings
The two traps that cost most marks
NOT GIVEN
This is where students with strong general knowledge lose marks. Medical and science students in Mangaluru often know the topic and "fill in" what the passage does not say. The rule is simple: answer only from the text.
- FALSE means the passage says the opposite.
- NOT GIVEN means the passage does not say either way.
If you are looking for evidence and cannot find it after a careful scan, it is usually NOT GIVEN. Do not spend three minutes hunting.
Matching Headings
The trap here is matching a heading to a paragraph because one word appears in both. Headings describe the main idea of the whole paragraph, not a single detail. Read the first and last sentences of each paragraph, decide the main point in your own words, then look at the list.
A timing plan for 60 minutes
- Passage 1: about 17 minutes. It is usually the most straightforward.
- Passage 2: about 20 minutes.
- Passage 3: about 23 minutes. It is usually the hardest, so protect this time.
Use the flag-for-review button for any question you are unsure of and move on. Go back only if time remains. A blank answer scores nothing, so guess on anything left at the end.
Reading habits for students in Mangaluru
Many students in and around Mangalore grew up reading Kannada at school, speaking Tulu, Konkani or Beary at home, and switched to English for their degree. That is a strength: you are used to working across languages. The challenge in IELTS is speed and precision with unfamiliar topics.
Some practical ways to build that:
- Read outside your subject. If you are in MBBS or nursing, read about geography, history or technology. Engineering students at Surathkal or Moodbidri should try articles on psychology or the arts.
- Use your bus time. The ride from Kankanady to Hampankatta or from Mukka to the city is perfect for one short GT text or half an Academic passage on your phone.
- Learn paraphrase, not just vocabulary. IELTS rarely uses the same words as the question. Note pairs such as "decline / fall" or "not uncommon / fairly frequent".
How to practise with IELTS Learning
- Start with the free sample Reading set to see where you stand.
- Do one timed passage a day, then read every explanation, including for answers you got right by luck.
- Check your Mistake Notebook weekly: if most errors are NOT GIVEN, spend a week on that type alone.
- Use highlighting and notes on screen, as you would in the computer-delivered exam. Keep your notes short: a word or two to mark where an answer sits is enough.
- Once you score 30+ regularly, move to the Charged sets. They are harder Reading sets for students aiming at band 7 and above, with denser passages and closer distractors.
Our Study Notes include a full Reading strategy chapter, and the weekly IELTS blog covers one question type at a time.
