IELTS Reading Practice in Ranchi: Beat the Clock and the Traps

Reading is often where good students in Ranchi lose easy marks, not because the English is too hard but because sixty minutes disappear faster than expected. Focused IELTS Reading practice, with explanations for every answer, fixes that faster than reading more newspapers.

  • 15 full mock tests
  • 88 Listening and 52 Reading practice sets
  • AI band feedback on Writing and Speaking
  • 1-to-1 teacher sessions from ₹299

What the Reading test looks like

You get 60 minutes, 40 questions and three passages. There is no extra time to transfer answers on the paper test, so your answers need to be written as you go.

  • Academic Reading uses long texts from books, journals and magazines, often on science, history or social topics.
  • General Training Reading starts with short everyday texts (notices, adverts, timetables), moves to workplace texts (job descriptions, staff policies), and ends with a longer general passage.

For band 7, Academic Reading typically needs about 30 correct answers out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, so do not assume GT is the "easy" option.

The question types you need to know

On IELTS Learning, the 52 sets cover every common type:

  • TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN (and YES / NO / NOT GIVEN for opinions)
  • Matching Headings to paragraphs
  • Matching Information (which paragraph contains a detail)
  • Summary completion, sometimes with a word box
  • Multiple choice, sentence completion and short answers
  • Table, flow-chart and diagram labelling

Every question has an explanation, so you can see the exact line that proves an answer.

The two traps that cost the most marks

NOT GIVEN

FALSE means the passage says the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage does not say it at all. The trap is using your own knowledge. If a statement says "the bridge was the first of its kind in Asia" and the passage only says it was "an early example", the answer is NOT GIVEN, even if you believe it was the first.

Matching Headings

Headings test the main idea of a paragraph, not a single word. Many students match a heading because a word in it appears in the paragraph. Read the first two lines and the last line of each paragraph, decide the main idea in your own words, then look at the list. Cross out headings as you use them; there are always more headings than paragraphs.

A timing plan that works

Aim for roughly 17 minutes on Passage 1, 20 on Passage 2 and 23 on Passage 3, which is usually the hardest. If a question takes more than about 90 seconds, flag it and move on. On computer-style screens, the flag-for-review tool and the question navigator make it easy to return.

Skim each passage for about two minutes before the questions. You are building a mental map, not understanding every word.

Reading habits among Ranchi students

Students in Ranchi come from very different reading backgrounds. Some studied in English-medium CBSE or ICSE schools; many others studied under the Jharkhand board in Hindi medium and switched to English at college. Both groups can reach high bands, but they tend to need different practice.

  • If you studied mostly in Hindi, your accuracy may be good but your speed slower. Timed practice sets, every day if possible, build speed better than untimed reading.
  • If you are an engineering student at BIT Mesra or IIIT Ranchi, you probably read technical material quickly. Your risk is overconfidence: skimming past qualifiers like "some", "rarely" or "in most cases", which decide TRUE versus NOT GIVEN.
  • If you are a working professional at a PSU or consultancy, you read reports all day, but in a different way. IELTS rewards precise matching of meaning, not getting the general gist and moving on.

The English-language newspapers available in Ranchi help with vocabulary, but they are not a substitute for timed IELTS-format passages.

How to structure IELTS Reading practice on IELTS Learning

  1. Start with the free sample Reading sets on the practice tests page to see your current level.
  2. Practise one question type at a time for a week (for example, only Matching Headings) until your accuracy improves.
  3. Then move to full passages under a strict timer.
  4. Review every wrong answer the same day. The Mistake Notebook saves them automatically.
  5. Once you regularly score 30 or more in a full test, try the Charged sets. They use harder passages and closer distractors, built for students aiming at 7+.

Questions from students in Ranchi

I studied in Hindi medium in Jharkhand. Can I still score well in IELTS Reading?

Yes. Medium of school matters less than regular, timed practice. Many students who studied in Hindi medium build speed by doing one timed passage a day and reviewing every mistake.

How many Reading answers do I need for band 7?

For Academic Reading, band 7 typically needs about 30 out of 40. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, so check your score with the Band Score Calculator after each practice test.

What is the difference between FALSE and NOT GIVEN?

FALSE means the passage clearly says the opposite of the statement. NOT GIVEN means the passage does not give that information at all, so you cannot confirm or contradict it.

What are Charged Reading sets?

They are harder Reading sets on IELTS Learning with tougher passages and closer distractors. They are meant for students already scoring well who want to push towards band 7 and above.

Should I read every word of the passage first?

Usually not. Skim for about two minutes to understand the layout and main ideas, then read carefully only the parts each question points you to.
