Why a full mock test matters more than extra exercises
Practising one question type at a time is useful, but the real IELTS tests something extra: stamina. You do Listening, Reading and Writing back to back, and your concentration in the last Reading passage is very different from your concentration in the first. Only a full mock test shows you that.
A mock also reveals timing problems. Many students in Sylhet tell themselves they finish Reading comfortably, then discover that under a real 60-minute clock they leave five questions blank. It is far better to discover that at home than in the test room.
How our IELTS mock tests work
IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests for Academic and General Training, each with all four sections. The screens are built to behave like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- A visible timer for each section.
- A question navigator so you can jump between questions and see what you have not answered.
- Flag for review for questions you want to come back to.
- A highlighter and notes tool for Reading passages.
- Drag-and-drop for Matching Headings and word-box summaries.
When you finish, Listening and Reading are marked instantly with a band score. Your Writing receives an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and your Speaking answers are transcribed and given AI feedback. Every wrong Listening or Reading answer goes straight into your Mistake Notebook.
If you have never seen a computer-based IELTS screen before, start with the free sample mock test. It is complete, all four sections, and needs no card.
Taking a mock under exam conditions in Sylhet
Homes in Sylhet are rarely silent. Relatives visit, the call to prayer sounds from the local mosque, and in the rainy season the noise on a tin roof can be loud. You cannot control everything, but you can get close to test conditions:
- Pick your time. Early morning or late evening is usually quietest. Avoid times when you know guests are expected.
- Tell the household. Ask for about three hours without interruptions. Explain it is a practice exam.
- Use wired headphones for Listening if you can, and test the volume before you start.
- Charge your device and plan for load-shedding. Keep the laptop plugged in, and have your phone charged as a back-up connection if the power cuts.
- Clear the desk. No dictionary, no phone notifications, no tea refills in the middle of a section.
- Do not pause. If you stop the clock, the score stops telling you the truth.
How to use your results
A score is only useful if it changes what you do next.
- Listening: look at which parts you lost marks in. Part 1 errors are usually spelling or numbers; Part 4 errors are usually lost concentration.
- Reading: check your question types. If most mistakes are TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN, the problem is the method, not your English level.
- Writing: read the four criteria scores. A low Task Response score needs a different fix from a low Grammatical Range score.
- Speaking: read your transcript. Seeing your own repeated words and long pauses on the page is often a surprise.
Then open the Mistake Notebook a day later and try the same questions again without looking at the answers.
How many mock tests should you take?
There is no magic number, but a sensible pattern for most students is:
- One mock at the start to find your level.
- One mock every one to two weeks during preparation, with targeted practice in between.
- Two or three mocks in the final fortnight, spaced out so you have time to review.
Taking a mock every day without reviewing the answers is the most common mistake. You repeat the same errors faster.
Who in Sylhet benefits most
Mock tests are especially useful if you are sitting the computer-delivered test for the first time, if your target is a UK university intake with a tight deadline, or if you are a working professional or doctor who cannot afford a retake. They also help students who are unsure whether they are ready: one honest mock answers that question.
Full Access unlocks every mock for $12 for 2 months. You can register here, and use the Band Score Calculator to see how your section scores combine into an overall band. When you feel ready, book the real test through the official IELTS providers in Bangladesh and check the current fees and dates on their sites.
