What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
Bands are reported from 0 to 9 in half bands, for each module and overall. In simple terms:
- Band 7 (good user): you handle complex language well, with occasional mistakes and misunderstandings in some situations.
- Band 7.5: consistent band 7 performance with some band 8 features.
- Band 8 (very good user): fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic errors.
In practice, per module:
- Listening: band 7 typically needs about 30/40; band 8 needs roughly 35 or more.
- Academic Reading: band 7 typically needs about 30/40; General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 needs a clear position throughout, well-developed ideas, a range of complex sentences with mostly error-free ones, and less common vocabulary used accurately.
- Speaking: band 7 means speaking at length without noticeable effort, with flexible vocabulary, a mix of simple and complex structures, and pronunciation that is easy to follow.
Typical requirements for Sylhet's popular destinations
Requirements vary a lot, so treat these as general patterns and always check the exact figure with the university, employer or authority:
- UK universities: many ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, often with a minimum in each module. Competitive courses and some postgraduate programmes may ask for more.
- Health professions: doctors and nurses from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and other colleges planning to work abroad often face higher module minimums, commonly around 7 or above. Check with the relevant regulator.
- Canada and Australia: university courses often ask for 6.5 overall, and some professional or skilled routes reward higher scores.
- Family and spouse routes: some UK family routes ask for a specific test such as IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills at a particular level. Rules change, so check which test and level your route needs before you book.
Never rely on what a relative needed a few years ago. Requirements are updated regularly.
Why students get stuck at 6 or 6.5
Many Sylhet students reach 6 quickly and then plateau. Usually it is one of these:
- One weak module pulling the average down, often Writing.
- Practising at the same level instead of with harder material.
- No feedback loop: doing lots of tests without changing anything.
- Exam nerves in Speaking, especially for students who rarely speak English outside the classroom.
The good news is that most of the gap between 6.5 and 7 is technique and consistency, not a whole new level of English.
A realistic eight-week plan from 6 to 7+
Weeks 1 to 2: diagnose.
- Take a full mock test under exam conditions.
- Use the Band Score Calculator to see which module gains would lift your overall band the most.
- Study the score breakdown: which question types and which Writing criteria are weakest?
Weeks 3 to 5: target.
- Spend 60 per cent of your time on your weakest module.
- Write two Task 2 essays a week and rewrite one paragraph from each using the feedback.
- Do one Speaking Part 2 cue card a day, recorded and reviewed.
- Move from standard to Charged Reading and Listening sets once you are scoring 30+ consistently.
Weeks 6 to 8: perform.
- One full mock test a week, reviewed carefully.
- Book a teacher session for a full Speaking test or a detailed essay review.
- In the final days, use the Quick Wrap checklist and keep vocabulary light: Daily Vocabulary is enough.
Charged sets: practising above the target
If your standard practice scores have reached 30 or more, they are no longer stretching you. Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets built for students aiming at 7 and above: denser passages, closer distractors, faster audio. Scoring 28 on a Charged set is often a stronger sign of readiness than 33 on an easier one.
Making band 7 work around Sylhet life
Getting to 7+ in IELTS takes steady, focused practice over weeks, not a last-minute rush. A SUST final-year student might study in the evenings after lab work; a doctor at Osmani might use short sessions between shifts; someone preparing for a family move might study in the morning before the household wakes up. All of it works on a phone or laptop.
Full Access, including every mock test, Charged set and feedback tool, is $12 for 2 months. Register here. Teacher sessions are booked separately from $5.
