What 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
Band 7 is described as a "good user": you handle complex language well, with occasional inaccuracies. Band 8 is a "very good user", with only rare, unsystematic errors. In practice, each module looks like this:
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40; band 8 roughly 35.
- Academic Reading: similar to Listening, roughly 30 for 7. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: at 7, you answer every part of the task with a clear position, organise ideas logically, use less common vocabulary with some awareness of style, and produce many error-free sentences. At 8, errors are rare and ideas are fully developed.
- Speaking: at 7, you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language and a range of structures, and are easy to understand. Hesitation is about ideas, not about finding words.
Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. That means one strong module can lift a weaker one, which matters when planning.
Typical targets for destinations popular from Abu Dhabi
Requirements vary widely and change, so always check the exact figure with the university, employer or authority. As a rough guide:
- UK universities often ask for 6.0–7.0 overall, with competitive courses typically at 7.0 or above and minimums in each module.
- Australian and New Zealand universities commonly ask for 6.5–7.0 for postgraduate study.
- Canadian universities often look for 6.5 overall, with some programmes higher.
- Nursing and healthcare registration in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand often requires 7.0 or higher, sometimes in every module. Many nurses working in Abu Dhabi's hospitals find that Writing is the hardest module to lift to 7.
- Skilled migration routes use points or minimums that change; check the official immigration authority.
- Scholarship sponsors in the UAE may set their own minimums on top of the university's.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Moving a full band usually takes several weeks of focused work. This eight-week outline suits many working adults in the capital:
- Week 1: diagnose. Take a full mock. Note your band in each module and the question types you lose most marks on.
- Weeks 2–3: fix the weakest module. If it is Writing, do two essays a week with AI feedback and rewrite one. If it is Reading, do a timed passage a day and study the explanations.
- Week 4: second mock. Compare it with the first. Adjust the plan.
- Weeks 5–6: raise the ceiling. Move to Charged sets for Listening and Reading. Book a teacher session for Speaking or Writing.
- Week 7: third mock, under strict exam conditions.
- Week 8: review and rest. Go through your Mistake Notebook, use the Quick Wrap checklist, and do only light practice in the last two days.
If you are already at 6.5 in most modules, this may take less time. If you are at 6.0 in Writing, be patient: Writing usually moves slowest.
Charged sets: practising above your target
At band 6, standard practice sets are perfect. Once you are scoring around 28–30 out of 40, they stop stretching you. Our Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets built for students aiming at 7+:
- faster speech and more speakers in Listening;
- closer distractors, where two options seem right;
- more demanding passages with less obvious paraphrasing in Reading.
Training slightly above the level you need means the real test feels manageable.
Where Abu Dhabi candidates often stall at 6.5
These patterns come up again and again among working professionals in the capital:
- Writing Task Response at 6. The essay is fluent but does not fully answer the question. Planning for five minutes before writing is often the fix.
- Speaking Part 3 answers that are too short. Strong Part 1, then two-sentence answers in Part 3. Practise extending with reasons and examples.
- Reading time management. Strong English, but too long spent on one hard question. Flag it and move on.
- Listening spelling. Understanding everything but losing two or three marks to spelling or plurals.
Each of these is worth half a band on its own.
