What band 7, 7.5 and 8 actually mean
Band 7 is described as a "good user": you handle complex English well, with occasional inaccuracies. Band 8 is a "very good user", with only rare, unsystematic errors. In practice, here is what that looks like in each module.
- Listening: band 7 typically needs around 30 out of 40; band 8 needs roughly 35 or more. The difference is almost always Part 4 and spelling.
- Academic Reading: band 7 is roughly 30 out of 40, band 8 roughly 35. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for each band, so the margin for error is smaller.
- Writing: band 7 means a clear position developed throughout, well-organised paragraphs, some less common vocabulary used accurately, and frequent error-free sentences. Band 8 means very few errors and ideas that are fully extended.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language with some flexibility, and are easy to understand. Band 8 sounds natural throughout, with only occasional slips.
Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. One weak module can pull down an otherwise strong result.
Typical requirements for destinations popular from Doha
Doha residents apply all over the world. The figures below are general patterns only; requirements vary by institution and change over time, so always check with the university, regulator or immigration authority.
- UK universities often ask for 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with competitive postgraduate courses sometimes asking for 7.0 or more and minimum scores in each module.
- Healthcare registration in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand often asks for 7.0 in each module, and some bodies set higher requirements. Nurses and doctors in Doha should check their regulator's current rules carefully.
- Canada, Australia and New Zealand work routes typically use General Training, and higher scores often earn more points or improve eligibility. Many applicants aim for 7 or above in each module, and some aim for 8.
- Universities in Australia, Canada and elsewhere often ask for 6.5 overall, with higher scores for some courses such as teaching, medicine and law.
- Programmes in Doha itself, including some at Qatar University and the Education City campuses, may ask for an IELTS score for admission; check each programme's entry requirements.
A realistic plan from 6 to 7+
Moving from 6.0 to 7.0 overall is common over two to three months of focused work. Moving up by one full band in a weak module is harder and takes consistent practice.
- Find your weakest module honestly. Take a full mock and look at the four scores separately. Many Doha candidates find Writing is the bottleneck.
- Find your weakest skill inside that module. In Reading it might be Matching Headings; in Writing it might be Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
- Practise that one thing deliberately for two weeks, with feedback after each attempt.
- Sit a full mock to check whether it has moved.
- Repeat, moving on to the next weakness.
Use the Charged sets
Standard practice sets help you reach band 6.5. To go further, you need texts and recordings that push you. IELTS Learning's Charged sets are harder Listening and Reading sets for students aiming at 7 and above, with denser passages, faster speech and closer distractors. Students often score lower on Charged sets at first; that is the point. When your Charged scores are steady, the real test usually feels manageable.
Writing and Speaking: where band 7 is won
Writing and Speaking need feedback, not just practice.
- Use the AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria to see which one is below 7.
- Rewrite essays after feedback rather than always writing new ones.
- Book a 1-to-1 teacher session (about 20 minutes, from $5) when you are stuck at 6.5 and cannot see why.
- In Speaking, work on extending Part 3 answers with reasons, examples and comparisons.
Fitting band 7 preparation into a Doha working life
The people chasing band 7 in Doha are often the busiest: senior nurses, engineers managing projects, parents planning a family move. Aim for five short sessions in the week plus one longer block on your day off. Use the Metro for vocabulary and Listening, and keep Writing for a quiet evening at home.
