Why band 7 matters so much in Manila
Ask around any hospital in Metro Manila and you will hear about IELTS targets. Nurses and other health professionals aiming for the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada often face some of the highest score requirements of any group, sometimes with a minimum in every module rather than just overall. Graduates of UP Diliman, Ateneo, De La Salle and UST applying for competitive master's programmes, and engineers and IT staff planning skilled moves, frequently need 7 or more too.
Requirements vary and change, so the figures below are only typical ranges. Always confirm the exact score with the university, employer, regulator or immigration authority you are applying to.
- UK universities often ask for around 6.0 to 7.0 overall, with higher scores for some courses.
- Australian and New Zealand universities typically ask for 6.5 or more, and more for some programmes.
- Nursing and healthcare registration in several countries often requires around 7 overall or in each skill, sometimes with different minimums for Writing.
- Skilled-work and migration routes, for example to Canada or Australia, often award more points for higher scores, so 7, 8 and above can make a real difference.
What 7, 7.5 and 8 mean in each module
Listening
Band 7 needs roughly 30 of 40 correct, 7.5 around 32 to 34, and 8 around 35 or more. At this level you cannot afford spelling or plural mistakes.
Reading
In Academic, band 7 needs about 30 of 40. General Training requires more correct answers for the same band. Moving to 8 means almost no errors on NOT GIVEN and headings.
Writing
A 7 means you fully address every part of the task, organise ideas logically with clear paragraphs, use a range of vocabulary with some less common items, and write a variety of complex sentences with frequent error-free sentences. An 8 means errors are rare and do not distract the reader.
Speaking
A 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language with some flexibility and produce a range of complex structures. An 8 means you are fluent with only occasional hesitation for ideas, not for language.
Where Filipino candidates usually stall
Many candidates from Manila already score 7 or higher in Listening and Speaking. The usual bottleneck is Writing, sometimes Reading. In Writing, the issues are typically local usages such as cope up with, based from or result to, long sentences with comma errors, and Task 2 essays that do not answer every part of the question. In Reading, it is often confusion between FALSE and NOT GIVEN under time pressure.
So the first step is honest: find out which module is holding your overall band down.
A realistic plan from 6.5 to 7+
This assumes six to eight weeks and around six to eight hours a week, adjusted for shifts and classes.
- Week 1: Diagnose. Take a full mock test. Enter your module scores in the Band Score Calculator and see which half-band gains would lift your overall result most.
- Weeks 2 to 3: Fix the weakest module. For Writing, do two tasks a week and read the AI feedback for each criterion. For Reading, practise the question types you lose most, then timed passages.
- Week 4: Second mock test. Compare with week 1. If one criterion has not moved, book a 1-to-1 teacher session (about 20 minutes, from $5) to target it.
- Weeks 5 to 6: Step up to Charged sets. Harder Listening and Reading sets make the real test feel slower and easier.
- Weeks 7 to 8: Exam conditions. Two full mock tests at the time of day of your booked test, with honest review. Use the Quick Wrap checklist in your final days.
Charged sets: built for 7+
Once standard sets feel comfortable, IELTS Learning's Charged Listening and Reading sets push you further with faster recordings, denser passages and more convincing distractors. They are designed for exactly the student who is consistently scoring around 7 and needs to make that score safe.
Fitting high-band preparation into Manila life
Aiming for 7+ while doing a 12-hour hospital duty, a night shift in a Makati or BGC office, or a full university load is demanding. Be realistic. Short Reading and Listening sets work on weekday evenings; Writing and full mocks need a protected weekend block. If you spend hours on EDSA or the MRT, use that time for vocabulary flashcards and your Mistake Notebook, and keep focused practice for home.
