What band 7, 7.5 and 8 really mean
IELTS bands go from 0 to 9 in half bands. The overall score is the average of your four modules, rounded. Here is what higher bands look like in each module:
- Listening: band 7 needs roughly 30 out of 40; band 8 typically needs around 35. You can afford very few slips with spelling or numbers.
- Academic Reading: around 30 for band 7 and around 35 for band 8. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band.
- Writing: band 7 means you answer every part of the task, develop ideas clearly, use some less common vocabulary accurately and produce mostly error-free sentences. Band 8 adds precision and very few errors.
- Speaking: band 7 means you speak at length without noticeable effort, use idiomatic language with some flexibility and are easy to understand throughout.
Band 7.5 overall usually means a strong profile with one or two modules at 8.
Typical requirements for destinations popular in Chittagong
Requirements vary by institution, course and year, so always check with the university, employer or authority. As a general picture:
- UK universities often ask for 6.0–7.0 overall for postgraduate courses, with competitive programmes often at 7.0 and minimum module scores.
- Canadian universities and colleges often ask for around 6.0–6.5 overall; some programmes ask for more.
- Australian universities often ask for 6.5 overall, with higher scores for courses such as nursing, teaching and law.
- Malaysian universities often accept lower overall scores for many programmes, but competitive courses can ask for more.
- Healthcare professionals, such as doctors and nurses from Chittagong Medical College and other institutions, often need 7.0 or higher in every module for professional registration abroad.
- Engineers, including CUET graduates, and professionals in shipping and logistics, may find that professional bodies or migration routes reward higher scores.
The key detail for many people is the minimum per module. An overall 7.0 with a 6.5 in Writing may not be enough.
Why students get stuck at 6 or 6.5
Most Chittagong candidates who plateau have one of three problems:
- Writing stays at 6.0 because of memorised phrases, under-developed ideas and article errors, even when Reading and Listening are at 7.5.
- Reading accuracy drops in Passage 3 because of time pressure.
- Speaking answers are too short, or rehearsed answers do not quite fit the question.
The plan below targets those directly.
A realistic eight-week plan from 6 to 7+
Weeks 1–2: diagnose. Take a full mock test. Enter your bands in the Band Score Calculator. Write down your weakest module and the question types you lose most marks on.
Weeks 3–5: targeted practice.
- Four or five Listening and Reading sets a week, reviewing every error in the Mistake Notebook.
- Two Writing tasks a week with AI feedback on all four criteria; rewrite the weakest paragraph each time.
- Daily Speaking: one Part 2 cue card with the timer, recorded and reviewed.
Weeks 6–7: raise the difficulty. Switch to Charged sets: harder Listening and Reading sets with faster audio, denser passages and more distractors, built for students aiming at band 7+. If you can score well on these, regular test material feels manageable. Book a 1-to-1 teacher session, from $5, for a Writing review or a mock Speaking test.
Week 8: rehearse. Two full mock tests at the time of day of your real exam. Use the Quick Wrap checklist in the final days.
Higher scores for Chittagong students
Chittagong students have real strengths: science and engineering backgrounds help with Academic Reading and Task 1 processes, and many professionals here already use English at work in shipping, freight and export businesses. The gap to 7 is usually about precision, not general English. That is good news, because precision can be trained. For many people, the most valuable change is simply honest measurement: taking full mocks, reading the criterion-by-criterion Writing feedback and accepting which module is really holding the overall score down. If you are planning postgraduate study on the Academic track, you can also share your plans with us and, if you agree, our overseas education advisers can suggest courses that match your target score.
Avoid two local traps: relying on guidebook model essays, and practising only the module you enjoy. Balanced, honest feedback is what moves a profile from 6.5 to 7.5.
