Why mock tests matter
Practice sets teach you skills. A mock test shows whether you can use those skills under pressure, for nearly three hours, without a break in concentration. Many students in Bahrain score well on individual Reading passages but run out of time on a full paper, or write a strong Task 2 when fresh but a weak one after an hour of Reading.
A full mock reveals:
- your real band in each module, not your best day's band;
- your timing, especially in Reading and Writing;
- your stamina, which matters more than most people expect;
- your weakest module, so you know where your next fortnight should go.
How our mock tests work
IELTS Learning has 15 complete mock tests for Academic and General Training. Each covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and the screens are built to behave like the computer-delivered IELTS:
- a timer and a question navigator so you can jump between questions;
- flag for review, so you can mark a question and come back;
- a highlighter and notes for Reading passages;
- drag-and-drop for matching headings and word-box summaries.
Listening and Reading are marked straight away and converted into a band score. Writing receives an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and Speaking gets AI feedback on your transcript. If you would like a person to check your Speaking or Writing, you can book a 1-to-1 online session with a teacher.
A free sample mock test with all four sections is available without a card. It is the best place to start.
Sitting a mock test at home in Manama
The value of an IELTS mock test depends on how seriously you treat it. Make it as close to the real thing as you can:
- Choose the right time. Saturday morning suits most people in Bahrain. Your real test will probably start in the morning, so practise then.
- Find a quiet room. Tell the family, switch off notifications and put your phone in another room. If the call to prayer or traffic noise reaches your room, accept it: real test rooms are not perfectly silent either.
- Use headphones for Listening and set the volume once at the start.
- Sit at a desk, not on the sofa, with water and nothing else.
- Do not pause. If you stop the clock to check a word, the score means less.
- Keep the air conditioning steady. It sounds minor, but a room that turns too cold or too hot halfway through a summer afternoon will break your focus.
Using your results
Finishing the mock is only half the job. Use the next day to review it properly:
- Open the Mistake Notebook, where every wrong Listening and Reading answer is saved automatically. Group the errors: spelling, plurals, NOT GIVEN, headings, timing.
- Read the Writing feedback criterion by criterion and pick one thing to fix in your next essay.
- Compare your Listening and Reading scores with the Band Score Calculator to see how many more correct answers you need for your target.
- Choose two practice sets in your weakest area for the coming week.
How many mock tests should you take?
There is no magic number, but a sensible pattern for most students is:
- One mock at the start to set your baseline.
- One mock every one to two weeks while you study, never several in a row without reviewing them.
- One or two mocks in the final fortnight to rehearse timing and build confidence.
Taking mock after mock without fixing anything just repeats the same mistakes. The review is where the improvement happens.
If you are working full time in Manama, two mocks a month alongside short weekday practice is usually realistic. University students with a lighter timetable between semesters can do more, but should still leave at least two or three days between full tests so there is time to act on what each one shows.
Computer-delivered or paper-based?
In Bahrain, as in most places, candidates can often choose between computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS, depending on what is available on their date. If you are booking the computer test, our mock screens are the most useful practice you can do. If you choose paper, the content and timing are the same apart from Listening, where paper candidates have 10 minutes to transfer answers instead of 2 minutes to check. Check the official IELTS booking sites for the formats and dates available in and around Manama.
