Why a full mock matters
Practice sets build skills. A full mock test shows whether those skills hold up across nearly three hours of concentration. Many candidates in Dammam score well on single Reading passages, then lose marks in the third passage of a real test because they ran short of time or focus.
A mock tells you:
- your likely band in each module under real timing;
- where your time goes, especially in Reading;
- how tired you get by the Writing section;
- whether your Task 2 essay is finished in about 40 minutes.
How our mock tests work
Each of our 15 full IELTS mock tests covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The screens follow the computer-delivered IELTS layout:
- A visible timer for each section.
- A question navigator so you can jump between questions and see which are unanswered.
- Flag for review for questions you want to come back to.
- Highlighter and notes for marking key words in Reading passages.
- Drag-and-drop for matching headings and word-box summaries.
Listening and Reading are marked instantly with a band score. Writing receives an AI-estimated band for each of the four criteria with feedback, and Speaking receives AI feedback on your transcript. Any wrong answers go into your Mistake Notebook automatically.
Taking a mock under exam conditions at home
A mock only predicts your score if you treat it like the real test. In a busy household or shared accommodation, that takes a little planning.
- Choose your time. A quiet morning on a day off is ideal. Avoid starting straight after a night shift.
- Use a laptop and headphones. The real computer-delivered test uses a keyboard, mouse and headphones. Phones are fine for practice, not for full mocks.
- Tell people at home. Ask family or roommates for three quiet hours, and silence your phone.
- Keep the air conditioning steady. It sounds minor, but a room that is too warm in a Dammam summer affects concentration in the last hour.
- No pausing. Run Listening, Reading and Writing back to back, as in the real test.
- Do Speaking separately. In the real test it may be on a different day; just keep to the timings.
Using your results
The score is the least useful part. What matters is the pattern behind it. Give yourself at least an hour after each mock test to go through every section, ideally the same day while you still remember why you chose each answer.
- Listening: were errors spread out, or clustered in Part 3 or 4? Spelling mistakes count as wrong answers.
- Reading: which question types cost marks? TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN and Matching Headings are the usual culprits.
- Writing: which criterion scored lowest? That is your focus for the next fortnight.
- Speaking: look at the transcript for repeated words, long pauses and unfinished ideas.
Then go back to targeted practice sets and the Study Notes for those areas before the next mock. You can check how raw scores convert using the free Band Score Calculator.
How many mocks, and when
There is no magic number. A sensible pattern for many working candidates in the Eastern Province:
- One mock at the start to find your level.
- One every one to two weeks during preparation, with focused practice between them.
- Two or three in the final fortnight, spaced out so you have time to review each one.
Taking a mock every day without reviewing it rarely helps. One mock properly reviewed is worth three rushed ones.
If you work rotations, plan mocks around your days off rather than squeezing them into the end of a shift. A score taken when you are exhausted tells you about fatigue, not about your English. Students at KFUPM or Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University can avoid mid-term and final exam weeks and use the quieter weeks of the semester instead.
Paper or computer-delivered?
IELTS is offered in both formats in Saudi Arabia, and test sessions are available in and around Dammam. Check the official booking sites for current formats, dates and fees. If you choose computer-delivered, our screens let you get used to typing your essays and using the navigator. If you choose paper, practise writing by hand and transferring answers neatly.
